Okay--so here's the nuts & bolts to the story:
Meg was originally diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25. After undergoing chemo and radiation, she was deemed to be cancer-free. But because of the radiation she received during her fight against breast cancer, Meg was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 27. Despite odds to the contrary, she won this battle, too.
The next decade brought another bout of breast cancer, 2 bone marrow transplants, and--recently--her leukemia has returned.
And--just when you're thinking, 'how much can one woman take?'--Meg was diagnosed with a benign (non-cancerous) brain tumor last year. She was operated on, and the surgeon was able to remove the tumor. But just like her cancers, one bout just isn't enough. Meg's brain tumor has recurred. It's benign--but this time it can't be removed by surgery. (Meg has named the tumor "Herman"--so she can blame her behavior on it. But we know Meg---most of her naughtiness is just HER.) The tumor is growing slowly, and Meg is starting to suffer memory loss and even seizures. Her doctors are recommending a newer form of treatment--chemo or radiation 'seeds' to be implanted directly into Herman (good riddance, I say!!). It has a high rate of success--but there is also a significant chance Meg will be left with some brain damage.
Despite all of this, Meg continues to work. She is going to school. She supports her family and is very active in her childrens' lives. Two years ago, Meg sold her house to pay off some previous medical bills--but, because of the new diagnoses, she is once again struggling to keep her head above water. That's the basis for this website, and for our upcoming benefit.
NO ONE should have to bankrupt her future to save her life today.
